Tottenham take shock U-turn on Son Heung-min contract situation

Son Heung-Min injury fears take a backseat as Tottenham star makes international return.

Tottenham are not willing to hand Son Heung-min a new contract

Tottenham Hotspur skipper Son Heung-min has been subject to a lot of speculation surrounding his future as he has entered the final year of his contract.

The South Korean international has not only taken the captain’s armband but also become Spurs’ main man following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last year. He has been a vital member for Ange Postecoglou and a vocal leader on the pitch and off it for the club.

Thus, it was only a matter of time before the Lilywhites would decide on triggering a one-year extension in Son Heung-min’s deal. Reports emerged earlier this week that the north Londoners want to extend the experienced forward’s stay in N17 until 2026.

However, in a surprise twist, an exclusive report from TBR Football claims Tottenham have told Son’s entourage that they have no plans to open talks over a new contract. The South Asian star’s camp has been left shocked by the club’s decision to perform a dramatic U-turn on handing the player fresh terms.

For almost a decade now, Son has been one of the prominent faces at Tottenham. The versatile forward has been a fantastic servant for the Lilywhites since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. He has bagged 165 goals and laid on a further 87 assists in 417 appearances across all competitions thus far.

Despite turning 32, the £190,000 per week ace continues to deliver the goods at the highest level having bagged three goals and as many assists in the Premier League this season. Son continues to be a great leader, motivator and mentor for the young talents and academy kids.

Son and his camp have been taken aback by Spurs’ latest decision to not hand him a new contract

So, deciding against handing Son—a legendary figure at White Hart Lane—a new contract would be a massive call from the chiefs at Hotspur Way and one that would not have gone down well within our fanbase. His importance to the squad has increased tenfold since Kane left for Bayern a year ago, though, club-record signing Dominic Solanke has taken away some of the goalscoring pressure from his shoulders now.

While Big Ange does have some quality forwards capable of winning games singlehandedly, no one compares to what Son brings to the table week in, and week out. So, it seems a bizarre decision to not offer our skipper a new deal. Perhaps, Daniel Levy and Co. are planning to sign a long-term replacement for Son in the next transfer windows and want to gradually phase him out of the picture.
