3 realistic January targets who can help end Tottenham’s trophy slump

Bullish tactics, lack of depth- Three key takeaways as Tottenham fall to Galatasaray.

No Tottenham fan needs to be reminded of their team’s ongoing trophy drought. If silverware does arrive at Hotspur Way this season, a wait of 15 years will have come to an end.

With their “never give up” approach to football, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham certainly back themselves to beat anyone on their day, and their recent victory over Man City in the Carabao Cup must have given them the confidence go deep in cup competitions this time round and finally break the silverware deadlock.

Spurs are now not only strong contenders for the League Cup, they are also expected to go far in the Europa League, with the FA Cup still to begin for them. Postecoglou may not get another shot at a title with Spurs.

We know from last season that physical and psychological fatigue set over the course of their campaign derailed Spurs towards the end, so the management need to do everything in their power to manage their players wisely to avoid burning them out to the best of their ability.

So we can expect Spurs to look for reinforcements in January. Here, we present to you three players we believe could help Spurs finally end their trophy drought. These are players Spurs were already monitoring earlier in the summer, making them very realistic prospects.

Patrick Dorgu

This 20-year-old Dane has quickly become one of the hottest young prospects in Europe, and it looks unlikely that he will be taking an intermediate step upwards when he inevitably leaves Lecce towards bigger and better things.

The left-back has been likened to a certain Gareth Bale and has been on Spurs’ radar for a while. Valued by Transfermarkt at €12 million, Dorgu has at Lecce a €12,500-per-week contract running until June 2029.

Tottenham need more options at left-back not just for this season but in the long term as well. Ben Davies is not getting any younger and is expected to leave the club in the coming months, making Spurs very likely to be in the market for a left-back in January.

Angel Gomes

After leaving Man United as a teenager for more game time, Angel Gomes’ story seems to be about to come full circle as he’s frequently linked with a move back to England, with Spurs having been one of many clubs that were looking to get him in the summer.

Gomes has grown into a very capable deep midfield operator and earned himself an England call-up on the back of consistent performance for Lille out in France. The 24-year-old has already conveyed to Les Dogues that he will not be signing a new deal with them, and his current €710k-per-year contract runs out at the end of this season, so Lille may attempt to get at least some money for him in January, making things interesting for Tottenham.

Vanderson

The Monaco right-back was also on Spurs’ radar in the summer, especially after they moved on Emerson Royal to AC Milan. Now that Pedro Porro has become a target of both Man City and Real Madrid, the latter particularly keen to find a right-back solution in January because of Dani Carvajal’s season-ending injury, Spurs’ situation has only become more desperate.

Vanderson is valued by Transfermarkt at €20 million and has three more seasons remaining on his €3m-per-year Monaco contract. Spurs may go for him in January regardless of what happens to Pedro Porro.
