Tottenham under-21 goalkeeper Aaron Maguire is expected to leave at the end of the season

Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with a plethora of talents at Hotspur Way, and it is Daniel Levy’s job to ensure they take strides in their development.

However, not all of the academy products manage to break into the first team, and even if they do, become regular starters. It is a harsh fact that cannot be denied, and as a result, plenty of the Hotspur Way talents leave the club to grow their career elsewhere or are either released.

Aaron Maguire is one of those academy products who finds his Tottenham career at a crossroads. The Irishman is the deputy goalkeeper to Luca Gunter in the Spurs under-21s and has done well when called upon. However, the 20-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the ongoing season (Transfermarkt).

Should Daniel Levy release under-21 goalkeeper Aaron Maguire in the summer?

John Wenham—the owner of the famous Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—thinks Aaron Maguire will leave Tottenham when his contract is up in the summer. He praised the youngsters but feels there are two “outstanding” goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order.

“I still expect Maguire to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Unfortunately, he has two keepers ahead of him who the club value higher. Luca Gunter, who is contracted until 2028, and Josh Keeley, who is contracted until 2027.

“With Gunter unavailable, Maguire came in and put in a phenomenal performance, which will help him in his future prospects beyond Spurs.

“I’ve heard good things about Maguire, he works hard and challenges the other keepers. However, I think there are two outstanding keepers ahead of him who Tottenham will prioritise the futures of.”

With Gunter currently unavailable, Maguire put in a fantastic performance for the under-21s vs Ebbsfleet United in the group stages of the National League Cup at the Kuflink Stadium last month. As the game ended in a 1-1 draw, the Ireland under-21 international stepped up in the penalty shootout and made three brilliant saves as Wayne Burnett’s side won 4-3 on penalties.

Perfect star, hostile atmosphere and deja vu: Three talking points for Tottenham ahead of facing Galatasaray in the UEFA Europa League
It is difficult to see Ange Postecoglou stand in the path of Aaron Maguire leaving Tottenham.

Unfortunately, as Wenham claims, Maguire doesn’t look like breaking into the first team anytime soon. Josh Keeley is currently doing well on loan at Leyton Orient and will return to N17 in the summer with some valuable experience. Gunter is the first-choice goalkeeper at under-21, while teenager Sam Archer is starting to grow in stature at the academy level.

This demonstrates that Tottenham’s pool of talented goalkeepers runs deep at Hotspur Way. Plus, the Lilywhites are considering raiding our bitter rivals Arsenal for Karl Hein, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium expires at the end of the ongoing season. So, there just doesn’t appear any space for the talented Maguire in the squad at the moment.

Thus, Ange Postecoglou and the Hotspur Way chiefs are highly unlikely to stand in the way of Maguire leaving our club at the end of the season.
