Tottenham star highlighted for holding ‘his own’ against European favourites

Tottenham star Yves Bissouma highlighted for holding 'his own' against European favourites.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered the first defeat of their 2024/25 European campaign as the North Londoners lost 3-2 against Turkish side Galatasaray at RAMS Park on Thursday night. Ange Postecoglou was forced to name a stretched side owing to injuries in his squad, and that showed on the pitch as the Lilywhites were defeated in what has been a roller coaster of a run-off late.

While it was a disastrous night for Spurs, there were a few positives to take from the game, with one of them being the performance of Yves Bissouma, who started and played a set of ninety minutes for the first time in quite a while.

The Mali international hasn’t been in the best of form off late, which has also seen Rodrigo Bentancur displace him in the Australian head coach’s starting lineup at White Hart Lane. However, if yesterday’s performance is to go by, he was exceptional, with John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, claiming the 28-year-old enjoyed his best game for a long time.”.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham was raving about the former Brighton midfielder’s performance and couldn’t find fault in his outing against Galatasaray.

He said:

“I thought Bissouma had his best game for a long time. He was fantastic in the middle of the park. He was in there on his own for most of the game as the holding midfield player, constantly picking up the ball under pressure.

“It wasn’t easy because Galatasaray are a very decent team. As a result, they’re quite rightly one of the favourites to win the Europa League.”

Time to start this weekend?

Ange Postecoglou has opted to name a second fiddle side for the Europa League so far in the ongoing campaign, and while you could criticise that for the first two times, this midweek he had to keep Sunday’s fixture against Ipswich Town in mind.

With the performance that Bissouma put in, he could have an outside chance to start against the Tractor Boys this weekend.
