“When it goes up, there is no reaction” – Former Tottenham player lashes into defenders for Ipswich’s first goal

Postecoglou 'dissapointed' as Tottenham star faces spell on the sidelines.

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult run of form going into the North Londoners game against Ipswich Town at White Hart Lane today. While the hosts won their last Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, they suffered a blitz in the mid-week when Turkish giants Galatasaray defeated Ange Postecoglou‘s side at RAMS Park.

The Lilywhites have lost two of their last four games in the English top tier, which leaves them hanging with bare hopes in their pursuit of Champions League qualification, and hosting a recently promoted side would have been a perfect way to return to winning ways and get the season back on track. However, Kieran McKenna’s side have come in to surprise the hosts in the first half, with the Tractor Boys scoring twice to leave Tottenham on the back foot going into halftime.

Sammie Szmodics scored the opener for the visitors in one of the transitional sequences from Ipswich Town, where the former Blackburn Rovers ace adjusted himself brilliantly to a squared ball in no man’s land as he steered in a bicycle kick past Vicario. The player took advantage of the fact that none of Pedro Porro or Brennan Jhonson were left in between ifs and buts to get on tight to the 29-year-old Irish forward, who ultimately took advantage of the situation and slotted in the opener.

Is Tottenham defence in crisis?

And former Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly went on to lash into the Lilywhites defence as he insists there is a lack of accountability and leadership in the backline following the opener. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (via. BBC Match of the Day), he said:

“Tottenham have conceded a poor goal. Someone needs to have a chat and say, Step it up; there has to be accountability for a goal like that. When it goes up, there is no reaction; someone has to take charge of that situation. There should be a leader in there.”
