Tottenham have work to do in the January market if they are to mount a second-season charge for that top-four finish.
In the meantime, they also need to navigate through the hectic festive period to ensure at the very least that they don’t stray away from the chasing pack too far.
While many a position require reinforcement in January, Spurs are also focusing on the creative side of things.
Álex Baena revealed as “dream” January signing for Tottenham
According to a report from Fichajes, Tottenham have identified Villarreal’s Álex Baena as a “dream” signing for the upcoming January transfer window.
The 23-year-old Spain international, capable of playing both centrally and out wide, has been the Yellow Submarine’s creator-in-chief off the left this season with five assists in LaLiga as they mount a top-four challenge, currently fourth in the table.
Baena has a €60m release clause in his €2m-per-year Villarreal contract, which runs until June 2028.
A possible Son Heung-min replacement?
Baena’s role as a left-sided playmaker this season hints at Spurs possibly looking to move on their captain in the near future.
After all, Son turns 33 next summer, and even if one were to consider the possibility of him continuing at Spurs for a while longer and maybe even occupy central areas instead of the ones out wide, it still leaves Spurs with a vacant left berth.
However, Baena’s release clause makes him a unlikely target for Spurs, especially given they broke their transfer record just this summer.
