Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has been linked with a move away to Real Madrid
Tottenham Hotspur’s inconsistent form hit another low on Sunday when they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to newly promoted Ipswich Town.
The game not only underlined the club’s ongoing challenges under Ange Postecoglou but also showed how the team players when key performers are missing. Adding to the Lilywhites’ misery, recent reports suggest Real Madrid are planning to reignite their interest in Cristian Romero.
The La Liga giants’ injury issues deepened last week when Eder Militao suffered an ACL injury—the defender’s second in as many years. As a result, they are looking for cover in defence.
Cristian Romero has been heavily linked with a move away to Real Madrid in recent months. Spurs could face a stern test to keep hold of the defender in the upcoming winter transfer window as the European champions are set to push for his signature.
According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham will not entertain any bids from Real Madrid for Romero in January. It is believed that the Lilywhites plan to fortify their options in central defence, rather than weaken them by selling such a valuable player.
Romero, Spurs’ defensive lynchpin, has a contract until June 2027 (Transfermarkt) having yet to extend his deal since arriving at the club in 2022. The 2022 World Cup winner has gone on to feature 111 times for Spurs thus far, scoring seven goals and assisting once. He has made 13 appearances across all competitions this season, including the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town as the defender started the game after recovering from a foot problem.
Like Madrid, Tottenham have also suffered injuries at the back. The north Londoners are in dire need of quality depth at the heart of the defence, with Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin the only recognised options at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal.
Ange Postecoglou has an established defensive duo of Romero and Van de Ven; however, he only has Dragusin as a cover for both. Ben Davies has acted as an emergency centre-back, and while he has performed decently when called upon, a club like Tottenham should have quality depth in all departments, let alone at centre-back.

All in all, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way must stay hellbent on not entertaining any bids from Madrid for Romero. The South American is a vital player for Big Ange and having him available throughout the season would be such a big boost.
