Brennan Johnson is determined to help Tottenham win a trophy this season

Tottenham Hotspur players entered the November international break dejected after losing 2-1 to Premier League newbies Ipswich Town at home. The result left them 10th in the table, although only three points is the difference between the Lilywhites and the final Champions League spot.

Ange Postecoglou will be seeking a rousing response from his boys on Saturday when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. The resumption of the Premier League couldn’t be any tougher, even though Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues are currently on a four-game losing run across all competitions.

Several Tottenham players went on international duty and shone for their respective nations. One of them to enjoy strong outings with the national team was Brennan Johnson.

The 23-year-old featured in both of Wales’ UEFA Nations League fixtures against Turkiye and Iceland during the recently concluded international break. He starred in Wales’ 4-1 thrashing of Iceland at the Cardiff City Stadium, scoring and assisting a goal apiece.

Now, in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Brennan Johnson has outlined Tottenham’s ambitions this season. When interviewer Kelly Somers asked how confident are you that this group of players can win a trophy, the forward said:

“I’m really confident that um we can get a trophy this season. I think obviously the first season it was a different style of football I think at times we played really well and then there was times where we kind of struggled a bit. But I think this season overall, we feel more as a team, more together it’s a year’s more experience for everyone playing this football.

“So, I think as long as we stick together and just give everything we can, I feel like it can happen this season for sure.”

Galatasaray hope Fernando Muslera can aid their pursuit of Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur.
Can Big Ange end Tottenham’s 17-year-long wait for a piece of silverware this season?

Following Tottenham’s early season loss in the north London derby, Ange Postecoglou made it clear to the media, pundits and fans that he always wins a trophy during his second campaign in charge of a football club. The 59-year-old does historically have successful second seasons with the clubs that he manages, so there’s hope that he will end Tottenham’s 17-year-long drought.

Johnson feels confident too that the current crop of players can bag a trophy, be it the Carabao Cup, FA Cup or the Europa League. The Lilywhites remain just three wins away from lifting the Carabao Cup having dumped Man City out of the competition in the fourth round.
