Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson starred for Wales in the 4-1 win over Iceland
Tottenham Hotspur star Brennan Johnson was on the scoresheet for Wales in their UEFA Nations League win over Iceland on Tuesday night.
The forward’s strike in the 65th minute helped Craig Bellamy’s side beat Iceland 4-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium and end the international break on a high. The 23-year-old was able to get on the end of Liam Cullen’s pass to calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.
The goalscorer from Spurs previously acted as a creator as he provided the assist for Cullen’s first international goal, delivering a pinpoint cross for the Swansea City man to head home from close range in the 32nd minute.
With the emphatic win over Iceland, Wales topped their Nations League Group B4 with 12 points from six games and gained promotion to the prestigious competition’s top tier.
Ange Postecoglou’s tactical system has provided consistency to Tottenham, allowing players like Brennan Johnson to grow into a key cog within the team. The Nottingham-born talent has flourished this season under Postecoglou, whose high-pressing and aggressive style of play has enhanced the 23-year-old’s technical and goalscoring ability as a right-winger.
Johnson has added more contributions to his game for the Lilywhites this term (seven goals and an assist), with the lack of consistency often frustrating the fans and pundits alike during the 2023/24 campaign. However, he is slowly becoming consistent for both club and country, thriving for the latter under new boss Craig Bellamy.
Against Iceland, the young attacker’s contribution was crucial, completing 49 touches on the ball with a solid 86% passing accuracy. He made two key passes and created one big chance for his Welsh teammates on the night. The Welshman also completed 2/2 dribbles and won 8/9 ground duels. Johnson’s directness, rapid pace and ability to create opportunities mirrors his growing influence on the international stage.
The Tottenham wideman completed his fair share of defensive duties, as evidenced by his two clearances and three tackles. Additionally, Johnson forced three fouls from the Iceland players in his 89-minute stay on the pitch, demonstrating his ability to unsettle the opposition players. (Stats courtesy: SofaScore)
