Tottenham’s Walker Replacement Deal Looks Imminent – But Is He The Right Man To Fill The Void?

Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, according to French publication L’Equipe (via Football.London). If it happens, this could be a coup for the Lilywhites, considering the fact that the defender is in much demand.

Spurs remain in the hunt for a specialist right-back after the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City earlier in the summer. Although the first match of the season saw youngster Kyle Walker-Peters prove to be a more than handy presence in the position, Mauricio Pochettino might be tempted to go for an experienced player to add to his squad.

Kieran Trippier is injured and the club has been linked in the summer with potential moves for Hoffenheim’s Jeremy Toljan and Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo, although neither of those moves materialised.

Interestingly, Pochettino is yet to make a signing this summer and the right-back is not an immediate priority. Moves for Ross Barkley and Davinson Sanchez are rumoured to be ahead in the pipeline. That makes the news about Aurier very interesting.

A Hot-headed Presence

Aurier had a very tumultuous time in Paris both on and off the field. He was even suspended by the club for acrimonious comments about the then manager Laurent Blanc. An incident at a night club in Paris left him charged and Aurier’s visa to the UK is not a straightforward issue at the moment.

Notwithstanding all these problems, the defender is in much demand this summer with Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Juventus all reportedly interested in his services.

There were reports that United agreed to personal terms with the 24-year-old defender, pending his visa clearance. His legal case is due for hearing and that could well determine his availability in the English Premier League.

Pochettino confirmed that he is looking to add new players, after the opening weekend win over Newcastle United. Will that be Aurier? He might be mired down in legal issues at the moment, but he certainly has the ability and the experience at the top level that could help the team in the long run.
