“I think they will take up the option” – Tottenham star speaks out about contract situation

Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham

Jan Vertonghen has spoken about his contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur, as the Belgian’s contract ends next season. A report from Football.london claimed Vertonghen could have spoken to foreign clubs in January.

Speaking during the international break to HLN journalist Kristof Terreur (h/t Football.london), the Belgian claimed Tottenham could extend his deal by a year.

“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

The report adds that Tottenham had hoped for Vertonghen to sign a new deal but negotiations have not worked out for either party.

Vertonghen was the player of the season for the club last time around and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the defender, as per the report.

Tottenham will take the option of extending his deal by one more year rather than losing him on a free, according to Football.london.

Vertonghen is one of the best defenders in the world and we should not even consider losing him. Tottenham must do all they can to ensure the Belgian remains at the club for as long as possible.

The last thing we need is another case similar to that of Toby Alderweireld. Vertonghen and Alderweireld are a great pairing for the club and we need them for the coming seasons to win titles.
