Transfer News: Boost for Tottenham Hotspur as Real Madrid brace for Marco Asensio departure

Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sun) reports that Tottenham gave up the chance to sign Marco Asensio in 2014.

Asensio has become one of the best players in the world and has picked up a couple of Champions League titles with Real Madrid too.

The report adds that the player was recommended to Mauricio Pochettino by scout Ramon Planes. The Argentine was in his first season at Spurs at that time but the club failed to make a move for the Spaniard.

Asensio signed a six-year deal in the summer, as per the report, and his release clause is set at a staggering £442million.

The 22-year-old was being tracked by Barcelona too and was recommended by Planes, who has moved to Barcelona, as per the report.

The Spanish attacker would have been an excellent signing for us a few years back and wouldn’t have cost a lot too.

Tottenham have one of the best sides in the world but an attacker like the Real Madrid man could have turned us into champions.

Tottenham have done alright in the transfer windows since Pochettino’s arrival. Players like Son Heung-min, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen have been great but there have been a few question marks too.

It is difficult to ascertain how good Asensio could have been at Spurs but missing out on him does hurt a bit.
