Reading secure Khumalo loan

Reading have secured the signature of Tottenham’s Bongani Khumalo on a season-long loan.

Khumalo played his part in the club’s successful tour of South Africa, participating in all three fixtures including Saturday’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates.

The 24-year-old signed from South African side SuperSport United in January and was subsequently loaned to Preston North End, making seven appearances during his two-month stint.

The South African, who was linked with a loan-move to Scottish champions Rangers, revealed his delight at joining the Royals and is looking forward to helping Brian McDermott’s side push for promotion next season.

“It’s amazing to be here. It’s an unbelievable set-up at Reading – and I just got a great feeling from the club after playing here for Preston at the end of last season,” Khumalo told the club’s official site.

“I spoke with the manager and he was very ambitious with his plans for the season ahead, so there was only ever one option for me. It just feels right.”

McDermott was also quick to heap praise on Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp for allowing the deal to go through.

“Bongani is a player we know well. He played against us for Spurs’ reserves and also while on loan at Preston towards the end of last season, before he unfortunately picked up a metatarsal injury,” he added.

“I’d like to thank Harry Redknapp at Tottenham for allowing Bongani the opportunity to come out on loan and for giving us the opportunity to have him here.

“We are delighted to have him with us.”

Spurs have the option of recalling Khumalo during the January transfer window should the need arise.
