Spurs: Building for the future is a necessity

Tottenham Hotspur linked with Gary Hooper? Surely not a bad thing. He has scored goals at Celtic and Scunthorpe United and at 24, is an ideal age to be given an opportunity. This also is a player that, although hasn’t been called up, he has been linked to the full England squad. Lets see what he can do in the Premier League.

With the fact that currently we don’t have the lure of Champions League Football then Spurs have to cut our cloth accordingly. We aren’t going to sign Radamel Falcao. Someone like Hooper is becoming established as a goalscorer which is what we need.

Andre Villas-Boas appears to be a big believer in youth and building for the long term. He is playing Steven Caulker and Kyle Naughton regularly as well as handed more opportunities to Andros Townsend and Tom Carroll. With regards to younger players, I still would have gone in for Jordan Rhodes who is now scoring goals for Blackburn Rovers as well as at international level.

Spurs have bought young players before with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon springing to mind. These players also become an asset to the club both on and off the pitch as ultimately now Football is a business. So there is potential for making money for the club in transfer fees. After all, clubs are talking £50m for Bale?

Yes, it’s always great for a club like Spurs to be linked with players like Llorente and Higuain with big transfer fees, but the lure of Champions League football will mean these players go elsewhere. Spending big money with a stadium to fund – again, falling in to the “building for the future” bracket – we can’t spend money which may not even be there.

I remember Leeds United’s financial disasters, so, I firmly believe that rather than signing big name players, like Adebayor for example who doesn’t appear to give much care for the cause, let’s give players a chance that we believe will fit in to the mould and the future successes of Spurs.
