Gylfi Sigurdsson – A Tribute To Tottenham’s Underrated Midfielder

While north London erupted this summer with the arrival of Mesut Ozil and the departure of Gareth Bale, there has been little time for talk of much else. The space that has been left has been dominated by the form of Andros Townsend for both club and country and Arsenal being top of the league, and left the rest on the scrap heap. While Spurs went about spending the millions of pounds they did over the summer, there was a forgotten man who was not ready to let his place in the side go. That man was Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson.

With the likes of Christian Eriksen coming into White Hart Lane and Lewis Holtby and Mousa Dembele already at the club, the 24-year-old was regarded as a fringe player by many, but he’s proved them wrong.

He has played in 7/8 of Spurs’ Premier League games and has scored three goals, the same as the club’s big summer signing up front – Roberto Soldado. Not only is he joint top scorer but he’s also crafted eight key passes, proving that he has what it takes to unlock defences.

However, it’s his work-rate that fans love about him, and supposedly Andre Villas-Boas. Sigurdsson is comfortable with his defensive duties – he has averaged two defensive actions per game – and is more than happy to squeeze the opposition into mistakes.

His technique is brilliant and his mentality is superb, and if he keeps getting written off then he will only continue to prove people wrong.
