What Does The Signing Of This £11m Kenyan Means To Tottenham And It’s Midfield?

The London club Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama. The 24-year-old Kenyan international signed a five-year-deal with the Lilly Whites and a reported fee of around £11m was paid to the Saints by Tottenham to secure the player.

Giving a short look at Wanyama’s career; he started his footballing career with the Belgian side Beerschot AC in 2008 signing a four-year contract. In the summer of 2010, the Scottish side Celtic and the Russian side CSKA Moscow tried to sign the Kenyan, but Beerschot refused the offers.

In the summer of 2011, Celtic finally signed Wanyama for a reported fee of £900,000 and the Kenyan signed a four-year contract and became the first ever Kenyan to play in the Scottish Premier League. Wanyama spent 2 wonderful years with Celtic where he made 91 appearances, scoring 13 goals before making a move to the English side Southampton for a fee claimed to be £12.5 million and became the first Kenyan to play in the Premier League.

Wanyama had a difficult start to his Premier League career, but the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at the St. Mary’s proved a boom for the midfielder. His great performance saw him awarded the league’s African Player of the Month once.

Wanyama is considered as one of the most hard working and one of the toughest midfielders in the league. He is a pure defensive midfielder, who can stop the opponent’s attack quite easily. Wanyama has previously worked under Pochettino, and if we are not wrong, then Pochettino used the similar formation for the Lilly-Whites he used for the Saints, and therefore, Wanayama is familiar to his tactics.

During his time at the St. Mary’s under Pochettino, he was used as a deep-lying midfielder, while Schneiderlin was used as a central midfielder, who was given the permit to launch himself up to support the attacks, while Wanyama was given the work to sit at the back and to defend the back line whenever the fullbacks rushed forward.

He is not the most prolific player in front of the goal, but he is surely capable to stop the goals. Wanyama had 82% of the passing accuracy last season, and that shows how he can be the one alongside Dier or Dembele, who could be trusted blindly.

Well, it will be a tough task to decide who will play in the starting lineup as all three of them; Dier, Dembele, and Wanyama are all capable players. It will be an interesting site to see how Tottenham’s midfield will operate when Wanyama is deployed on the field.

Wanyama is a cool and composed figure on the field, and therefore, it is safe to say that he is a rare breed of footballer who is tough and at the same time calm.

Tottenham have surely got their hands on a gem, and working under Pochettino will only make Wanyama a beast.
