Injured Tottenham Star Could Be Sold After £120K-per week Wage Demands

Erik Lamela of Tottenham

Tottenham midfielder Erik Lamela may be set for an exit from White Hart Lane in the summer, as the club are reportedly willing to listen to offers for the player. Lamela has not played for the club since October after struggling with a hip injury. He was reportedly seen in the Italian capital Rome and it sparked rumours about a return to AS Roma. The Argentine spent a significant chunk of his career in the Italian club before he made a £30 million switch to White Hart Lane in 2013.

In the last two years, Roma has risen to the position of being the only challenger for Juventus. The club believe that they will be able to topple the reigning Italian champions, who have been crowned as the league winners for the last five seasons in a row, with a player like Lamela in the lineup.

The 25-year-old was a major factor in Tottenham qualifying for the Champions League by finishing third last season. The player may not have featured since October, but he is reportedly keen on entering into contract negotiations with Tottenham.

Lamela is reportedly concerned about the lack of progress on his new contract talks. The player’s contract runs out in the summer of 2019. He is one of the lowest-paid star players at the club after a recent round of contract extensions saw the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli get massive increase on their wage packet. Lamela currently makes around £60,000 per week but he is reportedly looking at around £120,000 per week.

Spurs are not ready to offer this substantial increase, as they have not seen the player earn this increment. Even though Lamela was an influential player last season, he appears to be in a difficult position with regard to convincing Mauricio Pochettino that he is part of the plans.

The absence of the 25-year-old has forced Mauricio Pochettino to use the likes of Christian Eriksen or Heung-Min Son in the wide positions. This has turned out to being favourable for the club, as they have emerged as a real contender for the top two places.

Lamela’s contract situation could force Tottenham into selling the player in the summer. This could generate around £30 million for the club considering the player’s market value.
