Mauricio Pochettino did not consider stripping Hugo Lloris of the club’s captaincy after the Frenchman’s drunk-driving charge.

Lloris played in our 3-0 win over Manchester United on Monday and the Evening Standard adds that the 31-year-old was detained on Friday morning for seven hours.

The Tottenham manager was quoted by the Evening Standard as saying:

“No, I never considered [stripping him of the captaincy]. What happened was such a bad experience for him.

“He feels so sorry. He apologised to everyone, but not only apologised to our fans, us, the club and he shows his regret and apologised to the whole country, because that responsibility is massive. I think it was a good lesson for everyone, a massive lesson.”

The manager added that the player was punishing himself and the club would support him.

“He’s punishing himself. He feels so sorry and so bad because he knows that he made a big mistake, but in the same way I think he’s a man out of character. We are going to, of course, support him but knowing that we cannot justify of course. There’s no sense to take some decision like you told me.”

Lloris did have a role to play in our win as he saved a Romelu Lukaku effort right after Harry Kane opened the scoring for the side.

Spurs and United were even in the first half but our clinical finishing in the second half made the difference. Lucas Moura scored a brace in the win, ensuring we have a 100% record after three games.

It is great to see the club backing Lloris after his transgression and hopefully, the team and the player will continue performing as we must aim to win a title under Pochettino.
