Spurs opinion: Nicolas Tagliafico would be a smart signing for Tottenham

Tottenham are contemplating a £15million bid for Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, according to the Sun.

The 26-year-old Argentine has been excellent for the Dutch giants, and the report claims that Ajax are open to selling him just one season after he signed from Independiente.

The report adds that Arsenal are also interested in the left-back, who has had a fine season with the Dutch club.

A quality option for Tottenham

Spurs have a history of signing players from Ajax having landing Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen in recent seasons.

Tagliafico would be another quality addition from the Dutch giants after his impressive season for Ajax.

The left-back was excellent in the 4-1 win over Real Madrid and has been amongst the goals too.

Tagliafico might not be playing in the toughest league in the world, but a left-back having five goals and three assists to his name is more than a decent output.

When compared to our two left-back, Ben Davies and Danny Rose, the pair have combined for just four assists in all competitions and are yet to find the back of the net.

Tottenham’s left-backs have had their injury concerns this season, and we could do with more options in that position.

The addition of Tagliafico would also add some competition to the left-back slot, and the defender is versatile enough to play as the centre-back, giving us the option of playing with a back-three at times.

Tagliafico has done pretty well in the Dutch league and it would be a step up to play at Tottenham given the quality of the Premier League.

However, there is a sizeable South American contingent here and Mauricio Pochettino would certainly help the left-back settle in well.

The defender isn’t the youngest out there or British, as some of the other players we have been linked with in the past, but he would certainly make a smart signing if we spend around the £15million mark.

Daniel Levy has to be alert to such bargains in the transfer window. The Spurs chairman is known to be a tough negotiator, and hopefully, he can land us the Argentine in the summer.
