Spurs transfer news: Tottenham interested in Besiktas’ Domagoj Vida

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Domagoj Vida from Besiktas this summer, reports Turkish news outlet Takvim.

Domagoj Vida, 29, enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign last summer, guiding Croatia to the competition’s final, although they lost 4-2 to France. The defender was tracked by Spurs during the summer transfer window but he remained at Besiktas, where he has shone since his move from Dynamo Kyiv in January 2018.

The Croat has made 32 appearances for Besiktas across all competitions this campaign, impressing with his all-action defending. Vida’s performances in the second half of the season appear to have caught Tottenham’s attention, with Mauricio Pochettino keen to add the experienced defender to his ranks at the end of the season, claims Takvim.

Pochettino’s willingness to sign a defender in the summer could be due to Toby Alderweireld’s reluctance to sign a contract extension with our club. The Belgium international has a bargain £25m release clause in his current contract, with Arsenal and Manchester United interested in him, as per the Sun.

If Alderweireld leaves our club, Pochettino will be left with Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth and Jan Vertonghen as options in central defence.

Thus, it’s very clear why Spurs are linked with a move for Vida. The Croat isn’t a young, promising and player with high potential that Pochettino can nurture but instead, he is a highly experienced defender who’ll be viewed as a like-for-like replacement for Alderweireld.

Vida has all the qualities to thrive in the Premier League—he’s strong, physical, no-nonsense and aggressive kind of defender, whilst being able to play out from the back. Also a leader and a fantastic organiser of the backline, the 71-cap Croatia international could be a solid signing for Spurs, provided we get him for cheap.
