Mauricio Pochettino upset at failure to sign Philippe Coutinho in summer

Mauricio Pochettino is unhappy after missing out on Philippe Coutinho in the summer, reports The Sun.

The former Liverpool star was sent out on loan to Bayern Munich in the summer but has only scored twice so far this season.

Coutinho played under Pochettino during their spell at Espanyol, and the Brazilian did a decent job on loan at the La Liga club.

The Sun adds that Pochettino has complained about a lack of funds to rebuild his Spurs team.

Tottenham reached the Champions League final in the previous campaign, but have struggled for positive results this season.

We lie 14th in the Premier League and are 11 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

Tottenham struggling throughout the campaign

The Premier League has been tough on us but things haven’t been better in other competitions too.

We were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United and lost 7-2 to Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League.

Coutinho’s time in the Bundesliga hasn’t gone extremely well, and it would have been interesting to see him at Tottenham.

The Brazilian was great during his Liverpool spell, and Pochettino could have extracted the best out of the midfielder at Spurs.

Christian Eriksen is one of the players who has struggled for goals this season too. The Dane only has two to his name and was on the bench in the 1-1 draw against Sheffield.

Coutinho is going through a similar patch too, and has come off the bench in his last two appearances for Bayern.

Tottenham are likely to sign Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent deal

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club are likely to make Giovani Lo Celso’s loan deal permanent. (h/t Football.London)

Lo Celso joined Tottenham on loan in August, with the option of making the deal permanent. Injuries had limited his appearances on the pitch, with him making only nine appearances for Spurs in his first four months at the club.

The 23-year-old has played in the last 6 games for Tottenham, with impressive performances against Liverpool and Middlesbrough.

It appears that the club will tie him down to a long-term deal after his performances over the past few weeks.

According to the terms of the loan, the move becomes permanent at the end of the season if the club finishes in the top four. Spurs also have the option of making the move permanent in January for a lower fee.

Tottenham can activate the deal in January to sign Lo Celso for £27million as opposed to paying £34million in the summer (h/t Daily Mail).

Speaking on the midfielder’s future, Mourinho was optimistic about the deal being made permanent.

“I think Giovani is going to stay with us.”

Mourinho was also full of praise for the midfielder who scored against Middlesbrough.

“Amazing kid. Quiet. Waiting for his opportunities. Opportunities are coming step by step. I am very, very happy with him.”

The mandatory clause to purchase Lo Celso in the summer is binding only if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League. Even then, Spurs will only be getting 80% of the player’s rights, with Betis retaining the other 20%.

Lo Celso has made 19 appearances for Argentina and has scored 2 goals. He was a part of the Argentina squad for the 2019 Copa America.

Jose Mourinho is keen to reunite with Willian at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are in line to secure the signature of Brazilian midfielder Willian, seven years after he snubbed a move to Spurs in favour of Chelsea. Jose Mourinho is a fan of the midfielder and is keen on a reunion with the 31-year-old midfielder. (h/t Daily Mail)

Willian’s contract at Chelsea is set to expire in the summer and the player’s future at the club remains uncertain for now. European heavyweights Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus are also keen on the player who will be available for free in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham looked to have won the race for Willian in 2013, only for Chelsea to swoop in for the player at the last moment. The Brazilian has played 319 times for the Blues and has scored 57 goals.

The Chelsea manager at the time was Mourinho and the Brazilian flourished under this tutelage. The Portuguese also tried to sign the Brazilian during his stint at Manchester United. The addition of Willian would bring experience and quality to our richly talented squad.

Chelsea are desperate to keep hold of their star man and have offered the player a one-year extension on his current deal. Willian, however, is seeking a two-year deal plus a pay rise from his £110,000-per-week wage.

Willian put in a man of the match performance in Chelsea’s victory over Tottenham last month. He scored both the goals in the impressive 2-0 win for the Blues. The 31-year-old was a member of the Brazil squad that won the 2019 Copa America.

Chelsea are keen on retaining the player’s services and are likely to return with another offer. The Blues see him as a critical cog in their long-term plans. Willian has come into his own since the departure of Eden Hazard and has impressed under Frank Lampard.

Big Injury boost for Tottenham as key superstar could return to action soon

Tottenham Captain Hugo Lloris resumes training with the first-team

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has returned to first-team training three months after dislocating his arm against Brighton. (h/t Sky Sports)

The French international has missed 103 days due to injury, his longest absence due to injury. This has led to him missing 20 games for Tottenham this season.

Barring a few errors, Paulo Gazzaniga has done relatively well in the Frenchman’s absence. The Argentine will most probably make way for Lloris as Jose Mourinho would seek to add the veteran’s leadership to a leaky Spurs defence.

The goalkeeper’s return will add to the leadership qualities further diminished by the loss of Harry Kane. Spurs have one of the worst defensive records in the league. The Spurs manager has commented on the goalkeeper’s availability and has stated that he expected Lloris to return to action in February.

“If you ask me late February or early February, at this moment I go more for early. Things are going well. He’s getting his confidence back, he’s training so I would say he’s one of our new players in the January transfer window.”

Lloris has gone on to make 307 appearances for Tottenham since moving to the club in 2012. He is widely considered to be one of the world’s best goalkeepers and also captained France to World Cup glory in 2018.

Lloris’ return would be a huge welcome boost for the side as we look to achieve a top-4 finish under Jose Mourinho this season.

Several Tottenham fans react as Paulo Gazzaniga pulls off a penalty stunner

Tottenham Hotspur had goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to thank as they drew 0-0 away to Watford at Vicarage road. It is now 4 games without a win for Jose Mourinho’s side as they fall further behind in the race for the fourth spot.

It was a game where the goalkeepers took centre-stage as Ben Foster stopped Lucas Moura to keep the Hornets level at the break. Tottenham almost won the game in stoppage time, only to see Erik Lamela’s strike cleared off the line by the thinnest of margins.

Paulo Gazzaniga

It could have been much worse had it not been for the 28-year-old Argentine goalkeeper. Watford were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute when a Gerard Deulofeu shot ricocheted off Jan Vertonghen’s outstretched arm.

Thankfully for the Belgian defender, Gazzaniga dived well to his right to keep out Troy Deeney’s well-struck effort after appearing to win a staring contest with the Watford striker.

It was Tottenham’s second clean sheet under Mourinho in 16 games. Spurs fans were visibly relieved at the 28-year-old’s save and took to Twitter to praise the goalkeeper.
