Alasdair Gold highlights defensive problems at Tottenham ahead of January window
Tottenham have been below par this season and lie 11 points outside the top four places.
Our Champions League campaign hasn’t been great either as we lost 7-2 to Bayern Munich at home. We are already out of the Carabao Cup and most of our players have been below par.
There are several players who are out of contracts at the end of the season, and Football.london’s Alasdair Gold claimed that there has to be a change at the club.
The Tottenham correspondent was participating in a Q+A session and was asked if Spurs would move in the January window.
Gold highlighted that Tottenham have to sort things out and bring in replacements (h/t Football.london):
“If certain players are going to go and they won’t be leaving in January then Tottenham need replacements. The manager cannot rely on anyone who isn’t fully committed to the cause and new players need to come in and fill that gap.”
The journalist conceded that moving in January could be expensive but that Spurs needed to be reactive.
Defensive problems at Tottenham
Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are free agents at the end of the season. However, Gold spoke about our right-back position being a problematic area:
“Serge Aurier wanted to leave and has been an inconsistent performer this season and Pochettino clearly doesn’t trust Kyle Walker-Peters, even admitting earlier this season that he hadn’t convinced him, while Juan Foyth is yet to get the full-time gig at right-back.”
The journalist added that Spurs could do by reinforcing their central defence too given that there could be exits.
Gold concluded by claiming that Spurs cannot waste all their energy in trying to sell players in January.
They need to bring other players in to help the manager, but Spurs haven’t made too many moves in the previous winter windows.
