Toby Alderweireld could extend Tottenham stay after Jose Mourinho’s arrival
Toby Alderweireld could extend his stay at Tottenham after Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino, according to the Telegraph.
The Belgian is in the final six months of his contract and was ready to leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign (h/t Telegraph).
The report claims that the defender wanted a new challenge but feels “invigorated” that Mourinho is leading the team.
Mourinho wanted to sign the Belgian during his time at Manchester United and wants to build Spurs’ defence with the 30-year-old in the fray (h/t Telegraph).
Tottenham have to discuss new deal with Alderweireld
The Telegraph cannot confirm if Daniel Levy will open talks with Alderweireld over a new deal. The Belgian can speak to foreign clubs from January and can agree on a pre-contract too.
However, the defender is open to negotiating a new deal with the club and could extend his stay beyond the campaign.
The report claims that Mourinho also wanted Alderweireld during his time at Chelsea, and considers the Belgian as one of the best defenders in the league.
The Belgian didn’t start in our draw against Sheffield United and wasn’t in the starting XI against Red Star Belgrade either. However, he got to start for us in the 3-2 win over West Ham earlier. It will be interesting to see what happens with some players at the end of the season.
