Tottenham beat off interest from fellow London clubs West Ham United and Chelsea for the player. (h/t Sky Sports). Spurs will have an option to make the deal permanent for £56m upon the expiry of the loan in 2021.
West Ham United looked to have signed the player, only for Benfica to accept Tottenham’s offer which involved a higher loan fee. Personal terms are not expected to be a hindrance with the player keen on the move.
Spurs are in the market for a midfielder after losing Moussa Sissoko to a long term injury. Christian Eriksen looks set on leaving the club this month, further limiting Mourinho’s midfield options.
It is believed that Spurs entered the race for the player after they were contacted by the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes. (h/t Guardian)
Fernandes has family in London and is open to moving to the city. The 20-year-old has made 54 appearances for Benfica since making his debut in 2018. He has scored 2 goals and 2 assists during that time. (h/t Whoscored)
