The effects of Manchester City’s ban on Tottenham Hotspur

UEFA dropped a bombshell on Friday by imposing a two-year European ban on Manchester City for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. This will ensure that City cannot participate in the lucrative UEFA Champions League for the next two seasons.

The English champions also received a financial penalty of £25 million. The decision will be taken up at the court of arbitration for sport following City’s right to appeal the decision.

If the ban stands, Tottenham could be in line to directly benefit from the Citizens’ misfortune.

City is currently in the second position. Them missing out on the Champions League will open up a position to be filled from the English Premier League.

UEFA  regulations state that the next placed team will take City’s place in Europe’s premier competition.

‘A club which is not admitted to the competition is replaced by the next best-placed club in the top domestic championship of the same association, provided the new club fulfils the admission criteria.’

This will come as good news to Tottenham. We are currently in the sixth position, four points adrift of Chelsea in fourth. If City’s appeal fails, a fifth spot finish will be enough for Spurs to secure Champions League qualification.

This will come as good news also to the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea, Sheffield United, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Everton who will all look to finish fifth.

Tottenham still has to play all the above-mentioned teams in the league and can claim to have their fate in their own hands. Jose Mourinho’s side will look to overtake Sheffield United to go fifth when they take on Aston Villa this Sunday.
