Tottenham Hotspur make transfer call on Eric Dier following Eriksen exit
According to the Daily Mail (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur will look to sell Eric Dier in the summer. The club are not keen on repeating a drawn-out saga like with Christian Eriksen.
Dier is in the penultimate year of his contract. With the 26-year-old unwilling to sign a new deal anytime soon, Spurs will be in a vulnerable position once he enters the last year of his deal.
The club are keen to make the most of the situation and cash in on him this summer.
Dier has made 229 appearances for the North London side since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2014. A regular under Pochettino, the midfielder has found himself fall down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.
The 26-year-old is not keen on signing a new deal unless he is guaranteed significant playing time. Considering Mourinho’s usage of the player so far, it does not sound promising. (h/t Express)
Lessons learnt?
Tottenham sold Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window. The Dane joined Inter Milan for £16.9 million. Although Spurs made a profit on the initial investment, the midfield star went for an amount well below his market price.
The club was handicapped by the fact that Eriksen had just months left on his contract and could have gone for a free in the summer.
Jan Vertonghen is another player who is out of contract this summer. Spurs will once again lose out financially if the player refuses to sign a new contract.
The Club look to have learned their lesson and are not prepared to let Dier’s situation stretch out. They will look to sell the player this summer and avoid any unnecessary difficulties.

Dier has also represented the English national team and has won 40 caps for his country. Given his lack of playing time this season, it is unlikely that Gareth Southgate will include him in the England squad for Euro 2020.
