Oliver Giroud puts off Lazio contract following Tottenham interest
Chelsea striker Oliver Giroud will hold off on Lazio’s contract offer following the interest from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Telegraph. The French World Cup winner is out of contract in the summer. He has scored 19 goals in 70 appearances for the Blues since joining from Arsenal in 2018.
The 33-year-old played a key role as Chelsea won the FA cup in 2018 before defeating Giroud’s former side Arsenal in the Europa League Final in 2019. The Frenchman scored as Chelsea won 4-1.
Giroud has found chances hard to come by this season and has made just six appearances all season with four of them coming off the bench. (h/t Whoscored)
According to the report, the striker is waiting to see if Tottenham will follow up on the interest shown in January. The 33-year-old looked close to a transfer last month but it amounted to nothing in the end.
Tottenham was in the market for a striker following the long term injury to Harry Kane and Giroud was one of the names touted to make the move as Jose Mourinho looked to allay his striker crisis. (h/t Sky Sports)
Although Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had stated that he will provide more opportunities to striker Olivier Giroud, he hasn’t featured since November. (h/t Mirror)
Inter Milan were also keen on the striker but the Italians instead chose to finance a move for Christian Eriksen. (h/t Daily Mail)
