Inter Milan make contact with Jan Vertonghen over summer transfer
Italian giants Inter Milan have set their sights on Jan Vertonghen if the defender fails to agree on a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to the Evening Standard.
The 32-year-old has been a lynchpin at the heart of the Spurs defence since signing for the club in 2012. He has gone on to make 309 appearances for the club and has scored 13 goals in the process.
Inter have signed a number of players from the Premier League in the last two windows, including Former Tottenham star Chrisitan Eriksen. With the Dane’s contract running out in the summer, Spurs decided to cash in on the 27-year-old in January. The midfielder eventually completed a move to the San Siro for £17million.
With just months left on his contract, Vertonghen is free to talk to foreign clubs regarding a free transfer in the summer. After playing together at both Ajax and Tottenham, he could team up with Eriksen once again at Inter.
It is possible that Inter will intensify their efforts to sign the Belgian if Milan Skriniar leaves the club in the summer. Manchester City are said to be keen on Skriniar.
The report goes on to reveal that Inter Milan have already contacted Vertonghen’s representatives. Although Jose Mourinho is keen on the defender following in Alderweired’s footsteps in signing an extension, discussions regarding a new contract have come to a standstill.
The 32-year-old has been a fine servant of the club and has served with distinction. He has regressed of late and has seen his position usurped by Davinson Sanchez. Newcomer Japhet Tangana’s performances also have heaped more pressure on the Belgian.
The player’s agent was vocal regarding the interest Vertonghen has garnered from other clubs. However, he spoke of the mutual respect between the player and Spurs, and revealed that Tottenham remains an interesting option.
“There’s interest in him as a free agent, but Spurs is a very interesting option for us. The door’s still open.”
The Belgian had earlier commented that he would be interested in returning to Ajax to finish his career. A transfer to Inter will earn him a pay hike due to the new Italian tax laws.

Tottenham are reluctant to lose the player for nothing. With just months left, the club may not have a choice in the summer. What Vertonghen chooses to do remains to be seen.
