Jose Mourinho does not expect Steven Bergwijn to play again this season

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered some seriously bad luck accruing injuries this season, with the majority of them affecting our attack. The addition of Steven Bergwijn to that list comes as an unexpected blow in what has been a season of misfortune.

According to the BBC, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has stated that he does not expect the winger to play again this season. The 22-year-old suffered an injury in his left ankle and will undergo an extended period of rehabilitation.

“I don’t expect him to play this season.”

The Dutchman now joins the likes of  Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Moussa Sissoko on the sidelines as Mourinho’s men look to salvage what they can from the remaining fixtures.

Tottenham are currently seven points off top four and losing Bergwijn has just made the chances of closing that gap all the more harder. In a positive update, defender Ben Davies is expected to return in one to two weeks’ time.

In spite of the crisis, Mourinho has refused to give in to panic and has called for the need to be calm and positive. The 57-year-old admitted that the players and the staff are all in it together and that he has complete belief in his players.

“I believe in the boys and I think we can make it.”

Erik Lamela is yet to regain full fitness but Mourinho will be glad to welcome back Ryan Sessegnon into the fold. The 19-year-old is capable of playing anywhere along the left flank and could step in for Bergwijn in the coming weeks.
