Uncertainty over the contracts of Tanganga, Vertonghen and Vorm

The suspension of the English Premier League due to the coronavirus pandemic have thrown open a number of questions as to how the season will pan out.

Another complication likely to arise from this unforeseen circumstance is the fate of players whose contracts run out this summer. It is a situation that needs addressing especially if the league is to be extended.

According to Football.london, three players at Spurs could be involved in this uncertain turn of events – namely Japhet Tanganga, Jan Vertonghen, and Michel Vorm.

The likes of Vorm and Vertonghen are veterans who are reaching the twilight of their careers. Their future at Spurs beyond this season was suspect and the club will be glad if they can last the final nine games.

Tanganga, however, is different. He is an excellent prospect who has shown he has the potential to develop into an excellent player for us. It would be a travesty if we were to lose such a promising player for free.

Most of the players’ contracts expire by June 30 and there exists a good chance that league can run longer than that. It is still unclear how this issue would be resolved and we will have to wait and see what happens.

The fixtures will resume on April 3 at the earliest if the situation improves. In the increasingly likely event that the date is further deferred, there is widespread uncertainty as to what the outcome will be.

Tottenham are currently 8th in the table, seven points off Chelsea in the top four. It has been a largely forgettable season for us and it remains to be seen what we can salvage from it.
