Tottenham Hotspur suffer setback in Donny van de Beek chase
According to Spanish publication Marca (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have lost out to Manchester United in their attempt to sign Ajax’s Dutch sensation Donny van de Beek.
The 22-year-old was also linked with a move to Real Madrid. However, it now looks as if the Red Devils have won the race for his signature. Van de Beek has scored 10 goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances for the Dutch giants this season.
Having come through the youth ranks at Ajax, the midfielder has gone on to make 175 appearances for Ajax while scoring 41 goals and 34 assists. A versatile player, he is capable of playing both an attacking and defensive role in central midfield.
He played a key role in Ajax’s fairytale run to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. He scored in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium as the Dutch side won 1-0 in the first leg. The goal could have proven decisive had it not been for Lucas Moura’s second-half masterclass in Amsterdam.
He played 180 minutes over both legs and was a constant thorn in our side. According to the report, Real Madrid were close to agreeing on a deal for the player. It now appears as if Manchester United have taken the pole position in the race to land him in the summer.
The news will come as a blow for Tottenham, who were keen on securing the player. Van de Beek was the recipient of the Ajax Talent of the Year in the 2014-15 season and won the Eredivisie in the 2018-19 campaign.
