Tottenham predicted to finish above Arsenal in the PL table formulated by a statistical model
As reported by The Times (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur have been predicted to finish above bitter rivals Arsenal in the final Premier League table that has been worked out by a statistical model.
The model, designed by Julien Guyon, a Professor of Mathematics at Columbia University takes into consideration factors such as the strength of the opponents left to be played and the number of home and away games. (h/t The Times)
Based on the Elo calculation method that FIFA uses to rank national teams, Guyon’s statistical model predicts a team’s position based on the average number of points that the team would have earned in the remaining matches. And according to that prediction, Tottenham would finish ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table. (h/t Express)
Following the suspension of Premier League due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there were doubts if the 2019-20 season would be completed.
And while the campaign will not restart at least until the end of April, the Premier League and the FA have confirmed that the season will be completed. Earlier, June 1 was the deadline for a league season to terminate, but that has now been pushed back indefinitely in order to ensure that the season is finished. (h/t Express)
Tottenham are currently placed 8th in the league standings, with 41 points from 29 matches. Arsenal, on the other hand, are just a point and a place behind the Lilywhites, although they have a game in hand.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to face five of the top seven sides in the season, including away trips to Manchester City, Wolves and Tottenham. And hence, Professor Guyon’s model predicted the Gunners to stay put in ninth spot with an expected points tally of 53, with Spurs finishing a point and a place above their rivals.

With the season being pushed back, Tottenham are likely to have a number of their injured key players back for the final run-in. (h/t Football.London) That is something that has not been factored into the table and could end up boosting our chances to at least break into the top six if not the top four.
