Jose Mourinho keen on signing Erling Braut Haaland
According to Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in making a shock move for Borussia Dortmund’s goal machine Erling Braut Haaland.
The Norwegian enjoyed a stunning start to the season at RB Salzburg and was linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs in January (h/t Daily Mail). Surprisingly it was Die Schwarzgelben who won the race as they signed up one of Europe’s best young talents.
Haaland continued from where he left off and has scored 12 goals and grabbed two assists in 11 appearances for Dortmund so far. He also showcased his ability to perform at the highest level as he scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Still 19, Haaland has now scored 40 goals and set up nine more in 33 games this season. One hell of a breakout season.
Tottenham’s lack of cover for Harry Kane has been a long-standing problem that was not addressed. With the English ace out injured, the onus of scoring fell on Son Heung-Min. The Korean’s injury came as a hammer blow to the club’s aspirations of making the top four.
The club look to have learned their lesson and is said to be pursuing a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window. Signing Haaland will be a coup considering the interest from Juventus and Manchester United. (h/t Express)
A change in system?
It remains to be seen if the player can be swayed, after his agent, Mino Raiola, stated that the striker will stay at Dortmund this summer. (h/t Express)
“I don’t think that when he left Salzburg it was the right time, but… I don’t think he’ll be leaving Dortmund this summer.”
If we do manage to sign Haaland, it is unlikely that he will be ready to play second fiddle to Kane. Mourinho can always tweak the system to play both of them up front. That could come at the cost of Son and Steven Bergwijn, who have both shown an eye for goal.
Mourinho’s Tottenham has lacked an identifiable system this season and starting afresh might prove to be an inspired idea.
