Barcelona looking at Jan Vertonghen as an option to reinforce defence
According to a report from Spanish publication Sport via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Barcelona are considering Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen as a potential option to strengthen their defence next season.
Vertonghen has been at Tottenham for eight years, having arrived from Ajax in 2012. The Belgian international has been an excellent servant for the club. However, his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium might be coming to an end, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
There has been an interest in his services from Serie A giants Inter Milan and now Barcelona are also looking at the Belgian international as a viable target. (h/t Football.London)
The report claims that the Catalans are scouring the market for players who will be free agents this summer. And Vertonghen, given his top-level experience and proven pedigree would be an enticing option for the La Liga champions to consider.
Vertonghen has made over 300 appearances for Tottenham during his time at the club and has captained the team on many occasions. The 2019/20 season has been somewhat difficult for the 32-year-old though, with the Belgian showing signs of age catching up with him.
