Tottenham Hotspur to battle Arsenal for Chelsea star Willian

According to ESPN (h/t Metro), Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of signing Chelsea star Willian have been boosted by the player’s preference to stay in England.

The 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer and will be available for free. Having spent seven seasons at Stamford Bridge, Willian is a seasoned athlete well versed with the English game. He has played 329 times for the Blues and has scored 59 goals and 59 assists.

Although he has not ruled out moving to another league, he explicitly stated that his preference is to stay in the Premier League.

“My desire is to stay in the Premier League, but I don’t rule out playing in other leagues, no.”

North London rivals Arsenal are also keen on the player. One advantage we could have is the player’s experience of having played under Jose Mourinho. It was the Portuguese who signed the player at Chelsea and oversaw his initial adjustment in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has, in the past, spoken of his relationship with Mourinho. He also admitted that the duo has kept in touch and still message each other.

Willian was on the verge of joining us in 2013. He also had his medical at the club before Chelsea swooped in to hijack the deal. The player can now lay those demons to rest if he does indeed make the move to Spurs.
