Tottenham could face financial penalty for furlough announcement

Tottenham Hotspur and other top clubs could be facing financial sanctions if they fail to agree pay cuts with their players after putting their non-playing staff on furlough (h/t Football.London).

Tottenham, along with the likes of Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Norwich City announced that their non-playing staff had been placed on the government scheme that pays 80% of their salary during the coronavirus crisis (h/t Football.London).

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made the announcement earlier this week, following which he has drawn a lot of criticism (h/t The Sun).

While the non-playing staff has had to take a pay cut, the players continued to get paid their full wages, despite no football match taking place in over two weeks and will not return to action at least until April 30.

Talks were held between the Premier League, the EFL and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) earlier this week over the matter, but no agreement over a wage-cut for first-team players was reached (h/t Football.London).

And Julian Knight, who is the chairman of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport select committee, believes clubs should face a ‘windfall tax’ if they furlough their non-playing staff and continue to pay their players, who constitute the vast majority of their wage bill (h/t Football.London).

“If the Premier League isn’t going to act to resolve this crisis then the government must step in by imposing a significant financial penalty on clubs to reimburse those hit hardest in the pocket.”

It remains to be seen if the PFA, Premier League and EFL are able to reach any sort of agreement over this situation in the coming days.
