Tottenham stars unhappy with club’s decision to furlough backroom staff
Tottenham Hotspur stars are reportedly unhappy with club’s decision to put backroom staff on furlough, increasing their resolve against taking pay-cuts. This is according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy announced last week that the non-playing staff, around 550 of them, have been forced to take a pay-cut of 20% and in some cases been furloughed. This decision hasn’t gone down well with former players and fans alike. And now, the Daily Mail claims that the Tottenham players are also not pleased about the development.
Some of the senior players in the squad are of the feeling that Levy is using the furloughing of backroom staff to put pressure on the footballers into taking pay-cuts, given the timing of the announcement which came right before the Premier League met to discuss player wage-cuts (h/t Daily Mail).
The players are also understood to be unhappy with the fact that Tottenham are also not topping off the wages of the non-playing staff (h/t Daily Mail).
As per the government job retention scheme, 80% of the salaries of furloughed staff will be covered by the government. Most other clubs that have furloughed employees such as Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Norwich City are topping off the remaining 20% to ensure the workers get their full payments (h/t Daily Mail).
But that hasn’t been the case with Tottenham, which hasn’t gone down well with the players (h/t Daily Mail).
