Discontent on the rise against Daniel Levy’s plan to furlough staff
According to the Mirror, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST) has called on the club to explain their decision to furlough 40 percent of the club’s staff.
The decision made by chairman Daniel Levy is proving to be more unpopular by the day. The THST has, however, stopped short of asking the club to reverse their decision (h/t Mirror).
The statement says that they are not against Tottenham making use of the scheme, but would like to have greater transparency behind the decision to do so (h/t Mirror).
The THST believes that calls for reversing the scheme are unwarranted if it leads to job losses. They have, however, asked the club to make their reasoning public. It was suggested that a better course of action would be to incorporate a voluntary reduction in executive, player and coaching staff remuneration for at least the next two months (h/t Mirror).
They also went on to call the decision a PR disaster for the club. The sooner it is made right the better. Unlike other institutions making use of the program, in football, reputation matters and the club are risking theirs with this action (h/t Mirror).
Never too late!
Liverpool too came under criticism for making use of the program. Following an outcry from the fans and former players, they decided to reverse the decision. (h/t Liverpoolfc.com)
The call to do so was met with praise from a number of quarters helping restore goodwill for the club. The Reds had incorporated a number of initiatives to help the vulnerable folks in the city, but all that was outdone following their decision to reverse their decision.
We are not aware of how our finances compare to that of Liverpool. It may or may not be possible for us to do what they did. It is, however, paramount that the club has fans on board while making what seems on paper a morally ambiguous choice.
