Daniel Levy not keen on splashing the cash on Alex Grimaldo
Jose Mourinho is keen on signing Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo, according to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t The Sun).
However, the boss has a problem in trying to convince Daniel Levy to spend big on the Spaniard, according to the report.
Grimaldo has been a success in Portugal since joining Benfica from Barcelona in 2016. The left-back has one goal and eight assists for his club this season.
Benfica value their 24-year-old defender at £30.7m. However, Levy isn’t keen on spending that much for the Spaniard (h/t The Sun).
Grimaldo also has three years on his current deal and it will be interesting to see if we make a serious move for him next season.
Trouble in the defence
We are already short of left-backs in the current team after Danny Rose was sent on loan at Newcastle.
The Englishman could not cement a starting place at the club and was inconsistent for a couple of years.
That leaves us only with Ben Davies as the first-choice for the position. Serge Aurier, Japhet Tanganga and Jan Vertonghen can all slot in as the left-back but none of them are regulars here.
Grimaldo would be a great signing for the left-back slot as he is a great crosser and passer of the ball, according to WhoScored.
The 24-year-old also takes set-pieces which would an added bonus for Mourinho. Spurs need to get some cover and competition for Davies and landing Grimaldo would be a coup for the club.
We did spend big to land Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven in the January window (h/t The Guardian).
Tanguy Ndombele also joined for a record fee at the start of this season (h/t BBC), and it will be great if we can spend the cash again in the summer.
