“I needed stability”: PL star opens up on why he snubbed Tottenham in January

Christian Benteke opens up on Tottenham links in January

Christian Benteke has revealed that there had been interest in him from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window. But he opted to stay put at Crystal Palace as he needed stability (La Meuse h/t Football.london).

Benteke has found the back of the net twice in his last 36 Premier League appearances. Even then, he found himself subject of transfer interest from Tottenham Hotspur during the January window (h/t Football.london).

Harry Kane picked up a serious injury in January. Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min were also injured soon after. This exposed the lack of depth in our attack.

This seemingly led the club to consider signing Benteke from Crystal Palace, who was also wanted by former club Aston Villa (h/t Football.london).

“I take the interest of both those clubs as recognition.”

However, the Belgian international decided against a move away from Palace. The reason behind it, he revealed, was that his family is well-settled at the moment and he is happy at Selhurst Park (h/t Football.london).

“Because I needed stability, especially with the kids. Plus, I’m really happy at Crystal Palace.”

As mentioned previously, Benteke hasn’t been in the best of form for quite a while now. In 36 Premier League games since the start of the last season, the Belgian international has managed just two goals.

A bullet dodged for Spurs?

So, it is unlikely that our goalscoring issues would have been solved by Benteke’s arrival in January. Perhaps, a bullet dodged for us.

We still need a new striker heading into the summer transfer window. Hopefully, the club doesn’t end up reviving their interest in Benteke and bring someone more prolific.
