Tottenham star Eric Dier charged by FA after confronting fan

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier has been charged by the Football Association after he climbed into the stands to confront a fan last month (h/t BBC).

The incident took place during Tottenham’s FA Cup fifth round contest against Norwich City. Spurs lost the contest on penalties after being held to a 1-1 draw on their home turf.

Dier, who had scored his penalty, climbed into the stand to confront a fan who had a disagreement with his brother after Spurs had lost 3-2 in the shootout (h/t Guardian).

The 26-year-old was then involved in a heated exchange with the fan, as he appeared to repeatedly lunge towards his target before stewards rushed over to intervene. Dier was eventually escorted back to the changing room (h/t Guardian).

Jose Mourinho sympathised with his player, but reprimanded his actions on the night (h/t Guardian).

“I think Eric Dier did something that we professionals, we cannot do, but in these circumstances, I think everyone of us will do.”

Dier had escaped punishment from the local authorities over the incident. However, the FA has now charged the 26-year-old Englishman. A statement issued by the FA read (h/t BBC):

“Eric Dier has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3. It is alleged that his actions at the conclusion of the fixture were improper and/or threatening.”

Dier has till May 8 to respond to the charges. It is understandable why he acted in the manner he did, with his family being insulted. But as professionals, it is something that he shouldn’t have.

There is no set punishment for this charge and it will be decided by an independent panel in the coming days.
