Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal set to battle it out for Flamengo star Gerson
According to Yahoo Sports (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur are set to go head to head against arch-rivals Arsenal for Flamengo midfielder Gerson.
Spurs’ interest was confirmed by the player’s father. He admitted that his son had also garnered interest from German giants Borussia Dortmund. However, the major threat is likely to come from our derby rivals Arsenal. (h/t Daily Mail)
The Gunners’ Head of Football Raul Sanllehi is a keen admirer. He had earlier attempted to sign the player while at Barcelona. The player had agreed on a deal to move to the Nou Camp before Roma swooped in to snare him. (h/t Daily Mail)
Gerson spent three years in Italy before moving back to his home country with Flamengo. A central midfielder who is also capable of playing an attacking role, the 22-year-old played a crucial role in his first season back in Brazil.
He would score two goals and four assists in 37 appearances as Flamengo won both the Serie A and the Copa Libertadores. They fell one short of a famous treble as Liverpool defeated them 1-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup final in December.
His athleticism and versatility will add mobility to the Spurs midfield that has seemed far too static at times. Tanguy Ndombele has failed to impress while Moussa Sissoko is not getting any younger. Adding Gerson will bringing dynamism to the midfield.
