Gus Poyet backs Jose Mourinho to end club’s trophy drought

According to Stats Perform (h/t Evening Standard), former Tottenham Hotspur favorite Gus Poyet has admitted that he will be surprised if Jose Mourinho ends his Spurs tenure without any trophies.

The Portuguese tactician is a serial winner who has won trophies in four different countries. Having managed Chelsea and Manchester United, he has won 11 within England itself. Having taken over at Tottenham last year, he could write a new glorious chapter in the club’s history.

Poyet believes that it is too soon to say if replacing Mauricio Pochettino with Mourinho was the right decision.

“If it was right or wrong, time will tell.”

He has, however, reaffirmed his faith that Mourinho can lead the club to silverware. Poyet was a part of the last Spurs side that won a trophy all the way back in 2008.

“If you give him three years at the club, I will be surprised if he doesn’t win a trophy. I will be very surprised”

Tottenham defeated another one of his former sides, Chelsea, 2-1 in extra time to clinch the League Cup. Poyet, who was the assistant manager under Juande Ramos, had a front seat view to our first trophy win this century.

He praised the Portuguese’s ability to prepare his players for important games as a strong trait. Although Spurs have come close on numerous occasions in the last few years, we could not make it past the finish line.
