Kalidou Koulibaly keen to embark on a new challenge

According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Daily Star), Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in their pursuit to sign Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly.

Considered to be one of the best defenders in Europe, the Senegalese is keen to embark on a new challenge whether it be the Ligue 1 or the Premier League.

The Spurs rearguard is a key area that requires additions in the upcoming window. Jan Vertonghen is out of contract while Toby Alderweireld is not getting any younger. Defensive solidity is a trademark of a Jose Mourinho team. To say Tottenham have failed to achieve it is a gross understatement.

Kalidou Koulibaly can be our Virgil van Dijk

With a rebuild on the cards, we could offer Koulibaly a challenge if he chooses to take it on. Virgil van Dijk has shown at Liverpool as to what difference a world-class defender can bring to a team.

It can be argued that the Dutchman accelerated the Merseysiders’ development. There is no reason why Koulibaly cannot do the same for us. Mourinho is the master of a defensive setup and he can do wonders with the quality that Koulibaly brings.

Interest in the player is high, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona all keen.

According to the report, Napoli will hold out for a fee close to €100million. If Spurs do decide to meet the valuation, it will make the Senegalese the most expensive defender in the world.

The biggest threat is likely to come from Liverpool. The Reds have offered Koulibaly a bumper pay package if he moves to Anfield. A partnership between him and Van Dijk is a truly sobering thought.

Mourinho has enjoyed playing the party pooper for the Reds in the years gone by. Hopefully, he can do so again.
