Gary Neville backs Harry Winks for crucial England role
Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Show (h/t Football.london), former England star Gary Neville has backed Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Winks to solve England’s midfield issues.
The 24-year-old midfielder came through the ranks in North London before establishing himself as a key first-team player. Since making his senior debut in 2014, he has gone on to make 135 appearances for the club.
Winks is a versatile player who can play both as a central and defensive midfielder. After a number of impressive performances for Spurs, Neville believes he can now do so on the international stage.
Speaking on the topic, the former United star went on to add that Winks could have been the difference-maker at the last major tournament.
Likening him to Jack Wilshere, Neville went on to add that Winks is a player who is good with the ball. Always available for a pass, the 24-year-old is a finely tuned machine at the heart of the Spurs midfield.
“I think he is the type of player who does play off-line. He can take the ball, he will always receive it on the half turn. I think he is a player who reminds of Jack Wilshere in the way he receives it and glides forward with it.”
Neville also named the Spurs star as one of our better performers in last season’s Champions League final. The fact that he was taken off came as a surprise to the Sky Sports pundit.
Winks has so far won six caps for England and has scored one goal. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Winks often serves a thankless role in midfield, permitting his teammates to serve the more glamorous ones. But the importance of someone who can win the ball back and keep it moving is a key component of today’s game.
In time, more will recognize just how important our star is.
