Twitter reacts to Toby Alderweireld winning the PFA Community Champion for 2019/20
According to the club’s official site, Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld has been crowned the club’s Men’s PFA Community Champion for 2019/20.
The scheme is set up by the PFA to reward players in the professional game at every club who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to off-field work during the season.
Alderwiereld was nominated after having shown a great interest in the club’s community work. The defender recently paid a surprise visit to Crowland Primary School to mark the third year of the Premier League Writing Stars poetry competition.
He has also been available when it comes to fan engagement. Alderweireld often meets with fans after matches and sends video messages of encouragement if he is unable to attend an event.
This is best exemplified in the case of six-year-old Edie Jackson, an unwell fan the player had planned to visit at home. Unfortunately, she wasn’t well enough, but Toby sent her a video message instead.
An honour to get the @PFA Community Champion award for 2019/20! As footballers, I think we all have an important role in giving back to the local community and I have always enjoyed connecting with people in this way 👍💙 #THFC pic.twitter.com/Gzqrbusz5t

It isn’t just local initiatives that the defender supports. He recently supported a national anti-bullying campaign in Belgium. This saw him send out 1,000 bracelets to young people, encouraging them to think twice before making negative comments.
As the COVID-19 pandemic lept loved ones apart, he donated tablets to hospitals in Belgium for patients to be able to connect with their loved ones. The Belgian international is a true ambassador of the sport both on and off the field.
The women’s award was won by women’s team skipper Jenna Schillaci, who has continued her stupendous work for the community.
A number of Spurs fans took to Twitter to congratulate Alderweireld for his efforts. We take a look at a few of them below.
