Tottenham Hotspur fans react on Twitter as Mario Gotze is set to be a free agent this summer

Mario Gotze was one of the world’s best young talents. Having burst onto the scene at Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp, the youngster went from strength to strength.

Alongside Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski, Gotze formed a formidable triumvirate that led the Germans to their first UEFA Champions League final since 1997. Unfortunately, they fell short in the final to arch-rivals Bayern Munich.

The youngster eventually moved that very summer to Bayern Munich. Although he failed to better his best season at Dortmund, his stock only continued to rise. It hit its zenith when he scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina.

Rather than build upon the success, the midfielder suffered more frustration rather than success on the pitch. He eventually returned to Dortmund in 2016.

However, he was a shadow of the player who had departed Signal Iduna Park just three years ago. Suffering from myopathy did not help matters either.

Fast forward to the present day and Gotze is about to become a free agent. The same was confirmed by Borussia Dortmund. Now 27, he should be entering his peak years, instead, it is a far cry from the player who looked set to conquer world football just seven years ago.

His situation has prompted a number of Spurs fans to express themselves on Twitter. We take a look at a few of them below.

It is debatable if Gotze can ever hit the heights he promised to. Given the lack of interest in the player, Tottenham should have no problems signing him. Whether the club actually chooses to do so or not remains to be seen.
