Jose Mourinho opens up on Tottenham Hotspur transfer strategy
According to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho believes the upcoming transfer window will be decided by sensible recruitment.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit club finances hard. Eye-watering sums paid for players in recent years could become a thing of the past. Free transfers and swap deals may be the order of the day as clubs struggle to adjust to the new normal.
The reality of what we face is not lost on the Spurs boss. The eternal pragmatist, Mourinho revealed that the club will not go big in the upcoming transfer window.
“What I would like in my club is what I know it will be. I would like it to be sensible, balanced and not spend rivers of money.”
He also called upon other clubs to respect the current situation, not just for football but society as a whole.
The Portuguese revealed that at the moment, the focus is to ensure that all rules and regulations are followed with safety taking the center stage.
The new normal
He believes that the current situation will do away with lavish investment. Such a scenario will sorely test one’s ability in identifying and recruiting players. The ability to throw money at a problem could now be a thing of the past.
“I don’t see the world and especially the football world being ready for some of the crazy numbers that we used to have.”
The 57-year old also went on to add that he does not expect the summer transfer window to open until September at the earliest.
The club still has to pay back stadium debt and the outstanding transfer fee. Daniel Levy has warned that the club is facing its most difficult time during his reign.
