Jose Mourinho pushing to sign Marseille midfielder Maxime Lopez

According to Spanish publication Estadio Deportivo (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is pushing to sign French midfielder Maxime Lopez.

Available at a bargain price of £8.9million, the 22-year-old midfielder could prove to be an inspired piece of business.

Lopez came through the ranks at Marseille before making his first-team debut in 2016. He has since made 146 appearances for the club, scoring 5 goals and 21 assists.

The 22-year-old is a versatile player, capable of playing anywhere in midfield. Talks over a new contract at the Stade Velodrome had broken down, with the player expected to leave the club in the summer. (h/t Express)

The negotiations have now suffered due to the club’s financial issues. The club have, however, qualified for the Champions League by virtue of being second when the season abruptly ended.

With him currently in the last year of his contract, Les Olympiens could be willing to cash in on the player to avoid losing him for free. Despite being young, he has good experience and has also played in the Europa League.

Lopez has represented the French national youth teams in the Under-20 and Under-21 categories. He was a part of the Marseille squad that lost in the final of the 2018 Europa League.

The Frenchman would be an excellent addition to the Spurs squad. Good on the ball, he is someone who can adapt well to the pass-and-move game. In addition to that, his considerably low asking price is another draw.

However, it remains to be seen if he will be willing to sacrifice Champions League football in case Spurs finish outside the top four.

The player is a fan of the English game and could work in our favour. Lopez had earlier refused a move to England with Liverpool in 2016. Opportunities from England’s big teams don’t come too often. He might just get a second bite of the Cherry with Tottenham. (h/t Express)
