Ralph Hasenhuttl drops hint over future of Tottenham Hotspur target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Speaking to BBC Radio via Southern Daily Echo (h/t Football.london), Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has dropped a hint over the future of Tottenham Hotspur target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
As speculation on the Saints skipper’s future refuses to die down, Hasenhuttl has stated that the club should avoid losing players on a free.
It is a direct reference to Hojbjerg, who will see his contract run out next summer. Since being made the captain by the Austrian, Hojbjerg has stepped up his performances.
The 24-year-old is a dynamic midfielder capable of playing in both attacking and defensive positions. The Dane also has considerable experience of playing in England, with 129 appearances for Southampton. (h/t Transfermarkt)
He would be an excellent addition to the Spurs squad. Not only does he bring in leadership but is not likely to cost a lot given the time left on his contract.
Hasenhuttl is unhappy at the situation and has warned that the player could be stripped off his captaincy once he enters the final year of his deal.
“It’s not good to go into the last year of your contract – especially as a young player with a big future.”
An accomplished coach, he would be well aware of what the midfielder brings to the team. Although he admits it is not the ideal situation, he hopes to make use of the opportunities presented to him.
It would appear from the comments that Hojbjerg will be departing St. Mary’s soon. Whether it is to Tottenham or not remains to be seen.

The Austrian’s comments can also be applied to Spurs. We were pushed into a corner regarding Christian Eriksen last summer. Jan Vertonghen looks set to leave while Toby Alderweireld too waited until the turn of the year to sign an extension.
